Meet the Team - Simon Withington, Chief Technical Consultant

Officially, Simon is JCM’s Technical Consultant. In reality, he’s the person the team turn to when something complex needs untangling. At its core, his role is about problem-solving. Whether through analysis and design, training or programming, Simon focuses on understanding the real issue beneath the surface and building practical, well-structured solutions.

There are no “typical days” and that’s exactly how he likes it. Variety keeps the work fresh, and each new challenge offers another opportunity to learn.Simon has loved technology since childhood, going on to study Software Engineering at Durham University before working for a financial consultancy firm in Newcastle. He later set up his own company, contracting for tech businesses in the Chicago area and specialising in iOS development.

After meeting Chris, Sara and Elle through networking in 2019, he began supporting JCM with the more technical elements of client projects and by spring 2020, he was fully immersed.

What Simon brings to the team is breadth. He may not claim to be “the best” at any one niche area anymore, but he has enough depth and range across systems and technologies to instinctively sense the right direction for a project. And if he doesn’t know the answer immediately, he knows exactly how to find it.

He particularly enjoys taking complex problems and designing simple, elegant solutions. Whether it’s building scheduling logic using prime numbers to match skills and availability, or reworking system architecture to reduce friction, he thrives when clarity emerges from complexity, even if he’d rather show you the spreadsheet than explain it out loud.

What he values most about JCM is the diversity of the team and the shared motivation to genuinely help clients. Seeing the practical difference a solution makes to someone’s day-to-day work is what makes the effort worthwhile.

Outside of work, Simon runs several times a week (when he’s not injured), and cross-trains on a static bike. He’s recently taken up karate with his sons and admits that staying active has become something of an obsession. Running, he says, builds mental resilience and self-belief, though he suspects his problem-solving instincts may have started with video games in his youth. It also helps balance a well-known fondness for Toblerone.

For Simon, most problems are solvable with the right tools, the right thinking and the patience to work through them properly.
